Chapter 19: The Help

Raylan's POV

My mother was making tea when I let myself in the kitchen door at ten that night.

She did not turn around.

"I thought it would be you," she said. "Roscoe would have slammed it."

The kitchen was the one I grew up in, with yellow curtains and a brass kettle.

The long oak table was where Clara's mother had once rolled out pie crust on Sundays.

My mother set out two cups on it.

I stayed on my feet.

"Clara has the medal," I said. "Faye gave it to her this afternoon. Roscoe heard all of it."

"I know. He called me from the parking garage. He said terrible things." She poured. "I told him he was in shock."

"Mom."

"Sit, Raylan."

"No."

She put the kettle down and finally turned, and she looked exactly as she always did, silver and upright and calm.

"What would you like me to say?" she asked.

"The truth would be new."

"Very well." She took her cup and sat. "I have known since the day it happened."

She said it evenly.

"I saw that girl's hand in the hospital, wrapped in a towel, and I looked at her mother. Her mother looked at the floor. I did not need to be told."

I had waited seventeen years to hear that, and it came out of her mouth over a cup of tea.

"You let Faye wear it," I said. "You let a whole town hang a medal on the wrong child."

"I let a grieving town have a miracle."

"You let Clara's hand scar over, and you sent her a check for college every year and called it a scholarship."

"It was a scholarship. It was a very generous one."
