Chapter 14: The Hostage Guest

"Her own safety," I repeated.

My voice came out very quiet, which is how I know I'm dangerous.

"The school has suspended her place," said the deputy. "The Director felt she should be near family."

"The Director felt she should be near a hostage."

"I wouldn't use that word."

"I would," I said. "I'm using it right now, in front of the whole hall."

Pippa had come up the steps and tucked herself against my side without taking her eyes off Jasper.

He was hovering a few feet away, twisting his hands, with every eye on them blinking at her.

"You can see me," he said to her. "Everything I've got. Are you going to scream?"

Pippa tilted her head.

"Do they all need glasses?" she asked.

Jasper blinked every eye at once.

"No," he said slowly, in a voice of wonder. "No, nobody has ever asked me that."

"Because it seems like a lot of eyeballs to keep clean."

"Winnie," said Jasper, turning to me with his whole face shining. "Winnie, she's yours."

"She's mine."

"I would like to be her uncle, please."

"You're twenty-four."

"I'm ninety-one," Jasper said. "I've been practicing."
