Chapter 23: Look at Me

I took off my glasses.

The dining room slid away into soup, the way it had on the first day.

The lawyer became a gray smear, and Pippa a brown one, and Goldie a long blue shimmer with a butter dish in it.

Ambrose in front of me was a tall dark shape on one knee, with a small gold glint where the ring was.

"What are you doing?" he said, hoarsely.

"Looking at you."

"You cannot see me."

"I know. That's the point."

I put my hand out and found his face, wet and cold and shaking under my palm.

"I met you with a cracked lens and a wet coat," I said.

"And I still sat down at your table."

"I remember."

"I didn't know what you were. I thought you were a rude, rich, lonely man who needed someone to tell him to sit up straight."

"You were right," said Ambrose.

"I was right about the rude. I was wrong about the rest."

My voice caught, and I let it.

"You were the other thing too. You were the thing that eats the light. And you let me put my hands on you anyway."
