Chapter 17: No to Every Sunday
The ring was big, and it caught the stage lights.
Rob held it up between two fingers so the back tables could see it.
"Callie Troyer," he said into the microphone. "I have asked you for ten years, in a hundred different ways. Tonight I'm asking where everyone can hear."
Three hundred people sighed.
"Will you marry me?"
He turned the band so the spotlight lit the inside.
"I had it engraved." He smiled up at her. "It says, Say yes."
The ballroom laughed softly at something sweet.
I stopped in the aisle with my hand in my pocket, on the small black box Rob had handed back to me outside room 912.
Say yes.
He had read my ring.
He had stood in a hospital room and read it aloud to her, and now he had put it on a stage.
Callie looked at the ring.
Then she looked at Rob.
She reached out and took the microphone out of his hand, gently.
"Thank you," she said.
Her voice went through the speakers, clear and steady, and the room fell quiet to hear her.
"Thank you for the party. Thank you, Mr. Garland, for the plaque, and thank you, sir, for the toast."
She looked at the prosecutor, who nodded and smiled.
"I'd like to show you something first. It's on my phone. May I?"
"Of course, sweetheart," Rob said, still on one knee.
He thought she was going to show them a video of him.
She had parked her chair beside the podium, and I saw her hand go down to the cable that hung off its side.
I saw the screen behind her flicker from the anniversary slideshow to a black frame.
Rob's smile stayed where it was, but his eyes went to the screen.
