Chapter 16: Lowell's Last Hand

Donovan turned off the television and found his phone on the floor.

"The general counsel messaged at seven," he said. "He's withdrawn the motion to void."

"Why?"

"Because I signed it into the house's book last night, and no judge in Cook County will say a free man didn't mean it."

"So your father is selling the hotel instead."

"He's selling the hotel to the only buyer who can wire money before the house wakes up."

I pulled my jeans on and found my sweater under the bed.

Donovan looked at the buttons on the carpet and then at me.

"Where are you going?" he asked, though he knew.

"Down to the lobby."

"I'll come."

"You'll walk next to me," I said. "Not in front."

He nodded and put on a clean shirt, left unbuttoned at the throat because I had ruined the top two.

At ten to ten we came out of the lift into the Rask Grand lobby.

The marble floor had been cleared in the middle.

There was a table with a green cloth and two pens, and a row of chairs for the press.

Forty or fifty people stood around it, hotel staff in uniform at the edges, the doormen, the housekeepers, the man who had carried my bags for seven years.

Lowell stood at the table in a navy suit with his silver hair combed.

Beside him the buyer's man waited with a leather folder under one arm.

Odette sat in the front row in pearls with her ankles crossed.
