Chapter 24: The Key
I read my father's will in his hospital room on Thursday morning, with him watching me do it.
It was one page, in the tidy upright hand I had first seen on a cream note.
He left me the old rail hotel and the floors beneath it.
He left me the accounts, all of them, and a deck of cards with a worn blue back.
At the bottom, he had written a single line.
What will you make of it?
I put the page down on the tray table beside the yellow roses.
"That's not a will," I said. "It's homework."
"It's the only thing I've ever asked you for."
He lay propped on three pillows, thinner than a week ago.
The doctor said he had weeks.
He had decided not to hear it.
"I have an answer," I said.
"Already?"
"I was a nurse before I was anyone's heir. I've worked nights for nine years, and nobody who works nights has anywhere to go at four in the morning."
He waited.
"The house has forty rooms, a kitchen and a service lift to the street," I said. "I'm going to open a clinic. Overnight only. Free. Every person who works the night shift in this city can come down and be seen by someone who isn't tired of them."
"A clinic in my casino."
"In your house."
He closed his eyes.
His mouth did something I had not seen it do.
He was smiling.
"Put the green carpet in the waiting room," he said.
