Chapter 16: Taken In
The bridal shop on Main Street had my wedding dress, and it had been taken in at the waist for someone else.
I found that out on Friday at ten, standing on a carpeted box in front of a three-way mirror with a tailor's pins in her mouth and Conroy in a chair by the fitting-room curtain.
"It was a custom order," the tailor said around the pins. "Mrs. Rutledge brought in a second set of measurements a month ago. She said you'd lost weight from stress."
"She said that."
"I never thought it was you." She pulled a seam straight. "You're not the one with the new curve."
I looked down at the ivory silk, which was loose at my ribs and tight nowhere.
"Can you put it back?"
"In a day, if you'll hold still."
The bell on the shop door rang.
I knew the footsteps before I saw her.
Lacey came in carrying her purse in both hands, with no makeup on and her hair pulled into a rubber band.
She stopped in front of the mirror and looked at me in the dress.
"It fits you better," she said.
"It's mine."
"I know." Her chin shook. "I wore it Wednesday night. Constance made me. She stood me up in front of the long mirror and said the dress should photograph well from behind."
"Lacey."
"I'm not asking you to forgive me." She wiped her face with the back of her wrist. "I called my father this morning, and he told me what's in the paper. It's a loan. If I'm not at that wedding, he's in default by Saturday night. I'm going to stand up there, Della. I have to."
