Chapter 12: Kendall Calls

I put the phone on speaker and set it on my kitchen counter.

Kirk stood across from me with his arms folded.

I pressed record, and he gave me a small nod.

"Go ahead," I said.

"I'm not apologizing," Kendall said. Her words ran together. "I want that clear. I'm telling you because he's going to make me the villain, and I'd rather be the villain with the facts."

"Tell me the facts."

"Preston and I have been together for three years."

I had known it for four days.

It still hurt to hear her say it.

"Since the summer his grandfather died," she went on. "The old man put that clause in because he thought Preston was weak, and he wanted him married and settled by thirty."

"And his grandmother wouldn't approve you."

"She hates my mother, so she hates me. Nothing I did mattered. She said I had Devine blood and she wouldn't sign." Her laugh was ugly. "She said it to my face, in that sunroom, with the tea going cold."

"So you needed a bride."

"We needed someone she'd say yes to."

"Someone like me."

"Someone good," Kendall said, and I could hear her trying to make it sound like a compliment. "Someone who goes to church on Easter, volunteers at the children's hospital, and looks his grandmother in the eye. I thought, who do I know who that is?"

My hands had gone cold on the edge of the counter.

"You introduced us at a party," I said. "Two years ago. You told me he was a childhood neighbor."

"He was a childhood neighbor."

"You said he was lonely."

"I said whatever worked." She laughed again, and it turned into a cough. "I told him exactly what to say. Ask about her patients. Remember her mother's name. Never be late. You never noticed, because you never ask questions, Matilda. It's your best quality."
