Chapter 24: Reservation Found

The next November, on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I opened the airline app in our kitchen and typed in a confirmation code.

I had booked both tickets myself, in October, with my own card.

I pressed the button.

RESERVATION FOUND.

Two names, Hennessey and Dunne, side by side, and a departure at three.

"It's there," I said.

"I told you it would be." Darek was at the counter, wrapping a loaf of bread in foil for my mother.

"You watched me book it."

"I just wanted to see it."

He smiled and didn't say anything else.

On the kitchen wall, where Devin's board had hung in the old apartment, a new one hung beside the window.

It was white plastic, with number tiles that clicked.

I had bought it myself, in a hardware store, and Darek had held the ladder.

The tiles read 92 DAYS.

The wedding would be February twenty-sixth, in Charleston, in my mother's church.

The whole circle would sit in the front pews.

My mother had already ordered the ham.

The ring on my left hand was plain, and it was a size too big, because Darek had guessed.
