Tate walked down the center of the ballroom.
The guests turned their chairs to watch him, and nobody said a word.
"Good evening," he said.
"I apologize for being late.
"I was told this was a private family dinner."
"It was," Winifred said, from the head table.
She did not stand, and she did not raise her voice.
"You've been removed from the board, Tate.
"You have no business here."
"I'm a shareholder with a ticket," Tate said.
"And it seems the family has found a way to humiliate an honest man in front of three hundred people."
He reached the man in the rented tuxedo, who had gone gray and was holding his phone.
"I've never seen this person in my life," Tate said.
The reporter in the second row held up her recorder.
"Then who is T?" she said.
"Any initial would be a coincidence."
"Is it also a coincidence that your phone was in a cab that dropped this man at the hotel at six o'clock?"
