Chapter 24: The Same Room, A Year On
I woke to sunlight on the white duvet and a warm hand on my hip.
For a second I didn't know where I was.
Then I saw the ceiling, and the tall window, and the armchair in the corner, and I knew every inch of the room.
It was the twenty-second floor of the Brodsky Grand, on a Sunday morning, a year to the day.
My hand lay on the pillow with a plain gold band next to the square diamond.
I turned my head.
Evan was awake beside me, propped on one elbow, watching me with his gray-blue eyes.
He had been watching for a while.
"Good morning, Mrs. Brodsky," he said.
"I kept my name."
"Good morning, Ms. Keane-Brodsky, then."
"Hygienist Keane. That's what's on my badge."
"I'll say it at dinner parties."
I laughed and stretched, and he kissed the inside of my wrist.
The armchair by the window had my bag open on its arm, and a charcoal jacket over the back, and a pair of his socks that had been there since Wednesday.
The thin blanket lay folded on the seat where the housekeeper had left it.
It had been the best chair in the room for twelve months, and the only person who ever slept in it did so to keep watch.
"I've been thinking," Evan said.
"That's dangerous."
"I have a confession."
"Go on."
