Chapter 15: Supply Closet

The supervisor had found me at midnight, at the med station, with a clipboard and an unusually good mood.

"The sorcery tech slot opens in March," she said. "Your name is first on the list, if you certify."

"I'm testing out in three weeks."

"Then it's yours," she said. "Four dollars an hour, and you get to run the warming cabinet. Don't tell the others yet."

I had wanted that line for six months.

I stood there and felt almost nothing, because the only person I wanted to tell was the one who'd banned himself from my life.

Now it was nearly four, and the department was empty, and he was waiting for me in the lobby.

He sat on the plastic chair nearest the vending machine with his coat buttoned to the chin.

On his knee was a paper bag already going translucent with grease.

"Grilled cheese," he said. "From the place on Mayfield. It was the only thing open."

"You came to the ER at four in the morning."

"I'm not coaching," he said, standing up. "I'm feeding a person. These are different things."

"You look terrible."

"I've been awake since Tuesday."

"Come here."

I took his sleeve, and I walked him past the triage desk and around the corner.
