Chapter 20: County Hall
The county hall on Euclid Avenue was a gray building with a revolving door and a lobby that smelled like floor wax.
The hearing room was on the third floor, at the end of a long hall.
The floor was linoleum, and a row of molded plastic chairs ran along the wall.
At 1:52 the clerk came to the door, a thin young woman with a tablet and a lanyard.
"Mr. Corday," she said. "Mr. Pettibone is ready."
Anselm stood.
He wore the gray vest and the wool coat, and his left cuff was buttoned over nothing.
He did not look at me.
He looked at the wall by my head, and I saw him swallow.
I held out my arm, palm up, with two fingers over the inside of my wrist.
He nodded once.
Then he walked through the door, and the clerk closed it behind him.
The latch clicked.
