Chapter 21: River Road
The road ended at a gravel lot under the bridge, where the Allegheny slid by black and wide.
Hank backed the truck in until the headlights lay on the water.
He cut the engine and the lights.
Across the river a few windows burned in the dark, tiny and far away.
The heater ticked as it cooled.
"Well?" I said. "It's dark, and nobody is here."
He kept both hands on the wheel.
"Can I ask now?"
"Ask."
"I want you to be loud."
I turned in my seat.
"Loud."
"You've never raised your voice. Not once, in front of anyone. I know why. I think it's the best thing about you."
"Then why?"
"Because I want to hear what it sounds like when you stop being careful. Just once. With me. In here."
I didn't answer right away.
My heart was beating harder than I liked.
I have kept my voice low my entire life.
It is how I stay exact.
"Is it an order?" I said.
"No. A request. You can say no. I'll still be yours."
"Is it on the pad?"
"I'd write it on the pad."
I put my hand against his cheek.
"Yes," I said. "Once. Tonight. For you."
His breath left him in a rush.
"Thank you."
"Now your hands. Ten and two. And look straight ahead."
He did.
I unbuckled my seat belt and climbed across the bench seat into his lap.
