Chapter 23: Keys

His apartment was on the third floor above the restaurant, up a back stair that smelled of bread.

I had never seen it.

There was a leather couch, a table with one chair, and a bed the size of a boat under a bare window.

On the kitchen counter lay a ring of keys, a black datebook, and a folded sheet of paper.

He stood beside them with his hands behind his back.

"Everything I own that opens something," he said. "The truck. The restaurant doors, front and back. This place. The safe."

"And the paper?"

"My schedule for December. Every shoot, every meeting, every night I'm supposed to be somewhere."

"Why?"

"Because I want you to decide." He swallowed. "Which of them I go to. Which I skip. When I go home. When I sleep."

I picked up the keys.

They were heavy, a dozen of them, warm from his pocket.

"This is a lot to give a person."

"It's the only thing I have to give that's worth anything."

"It isn't."

"Audrey."

"The keys are worth something. You are worth more."

I closed my fist on the ring.

"I accept," I said. "On one condition."

"Anything."

I took a single brass key from my own coat pocket and set it on his palm.

"This opens the door in Squirrel Hill."

He stared at it.
