Chapter 9: Silk
On Tuesday night I brought home a silk tie and a yellow legal pad.
Hank was waiting on my couch with a bag of takeout.
"I didn't cook," he said. "I wanted you to see I'm capable of not cooking."
"Eat."
We ate noodles out of the cartons.
When we were done, I put the pad on the coffee table between us.
"Sunday review," I said. "Two days late."
"I know. I was distracted."
"By what?"
"By a text from Colin that said we know about the accountant."
"I called Martha. She says Colin is guessing. Nobody has anything."
He nodded.
"I'm not your accountant, and I never billed you for anything but the books."
"He's trying to scare me."
"He is. Does it work?"
He thought about it honestly.
"A little. Then I think about what you'd say."
"What would I say?"
"Let him."
"Good."
I turned to the MAYBE page.
"Read me the second line," I said.
He looked at it.
"Being tied. I think. Soft things, not rope."
"Do you still think so?"
"Yes."
"And the blindfold?"
His throat moved. "Yes."
"And the last one."
He went red in a way I was learning to enjoy.
"Her sitting on my face."
"Say yes or no or pause."
"Yes," he said. "Please. Yes."
I took the pen and moved all three lines, one at a time, from MAYBE to YES.
I wrote the date next to each.
"Now I'll tell you what I'm going to do," I said. "That's rule three."
"Okay."
"I'm going to tie your wrists to my headboard with this tie. It's silk. It won't cut."
"Okay."
"You can slip out any time by pulling down. Or you say Salt, and I untie you immediately."
"Okay."
"Then I'll put a blindfold over your eyes."
He breathed out slowly.
"Then I'll take my time with you. And at some point, I'll sit on your face."
"Please."
"And you'll make me come. And only after that will I decide what else."
"Yes, Audrey."
"Say Salt for me."
"Salt."
"Good."
I took his hand and led him down the hall.
I undressed him slowly in the lamplight, kissing each patch of skin as it appeared: shoulder, chest, the pan-shaped burn on his ribs.
I laid him on the white quilt.
He lay there, naked and hard, with his hands at his sides.
I took the tie and wound it around his left wrist once.
Looped it through the slats of the headboard, then around his right.
I tied it in a loose bow.
"Pull," I said.
He tugged.
The bow held, but it gave a little.
"You can get out if you want."
"I don't want to."
"Good."
I took a black cotton scarf from the dresser.
"I'm going to cover your eyes."
"Please."
I laid it across his face and tied it behind his head, and he sighed as the dark closed over him.
His mouth fell open a little.
His shoulders came down from his ears.
