Chapter 8: The Hearing
"What night?" I asked. "What date is on the video?"
Kat sniffed. "February ninth. Eleven at night. You're typing in his door code and walking out with a laptop."
I closed my eyes and started laughing.
"Keira. This is not a laughing situation."
"It's my laptop," I said. "Kat, it's my laptop. He texted me to go get it."
There was a long silence on the line.
"Do you still have the text?"
"I never delete anything he sends me," I said. "That used to be the sad part."
We came under the lift bridge the night before the hearing.
I was on the boat deck in the coat.
The canal pier was packed, and for one stupid second I thought it was for us.
Then I heard it.
"Stalker. Stalker. Stalker."
Two hundred people, maybe more, most of them my age, holding up phones with the flash on.
Sigrid's account had told them which boat to wait for.
The crew came out on deck one by one.
The deckhands lined the rail. The cook came up in her apron and stood next to me with her arms crossed.
The oiler stood on my other side, which he had never done before.
