Chapter 21: Who Spoke
The man from Garfield Heights did not wait for Bressler to hand him the microphone.
He picked it up off the table himself.
"Name's on the list," he said. "You can read it. I don't care."
The room had gone so quiet I could hear the cameras hum.
"Last spring I called this company to scream at somebody," he said. "My basement took on water. Claim denied."
"She was the one who answered."
He pointed at me with the whole of his arm.
"I yelled for twelve minutes. She said nothing. Not a word. I thought, this is the coldest woman alive."
He stopped and rubbed his jaw.
"Then she said, I am going to call you back on Friday. And she did."
"Friday at noon. She said, I found a state fund for sump pumps. Here's the form, here's the deadline, and here's my direct line."
"Got me four thousand dollars."
He looked at the floor.
"Never said thank you. I'm saying it now."
"I called her voice flat. It was the first voice all year that told me the truth."
He set the microphone on the table.
