Chapter 20: The Rail

Kerensa drove to the quarry alone, with Ward's gray squad cube clipped to her collar.

The green light was on.

Four hundred yards behind her, Rafe and the detective sat in a dark car at the rusted gate with a receiver between them.

"She wants you alone," the detective had said. "She'll say more to one person."

"She'll say it to me," Kerensa had said.

The road was empty.

At the bend she stopped and walked the last stretch on foot.

The wind came hard across the open rock.

Lorna was waiting at the bent rail, barefoot, in a long dark coat with the collar turned up.

She had a flashlight in one hand, pointed at the ground.

"You came," Lorna said.

"You asked."

"You're not her."

Kerensa stopped six feet away.

"I'm not who?"

"Don't." Lorna's teeth were chattering. "I had seventeen years of her mother's silences and her father's moods. I know a Haglund when I see one. You don't flinch. You don't apologize to doors. She never once looked at me like that."

"How do I look at you?"

"Like I'm something you're about to put down."

Kerensa said nothing.

"She wrote a letter," Lorna said. "To him. I found it on her desk, and I didn't open it. I just wanted to watch him read it. Did he cry?"

"His hands shook."

"Good." Lorna laughed, high and cracked. "I hoped they would."

"Why here?"

"Because it's where it happened."

Lorna turned the light on the rail, on the dent in the steel at knee height.

"I said, let's be sisters," Lorna said. "I told her I'd been horrible, and I wanted to start over, and I wanted her to see the view. She was so happy. She had this stupid little smile."
