Chapter 6: The Roof
Kerensa found the stairs to the roof at two in the morning, because she could not sleep.
The wind up there smelled of the river and smoke from the rail yard.
Her shoulder ached under a clean bandage, and her knuckles had split open on a guard's jaw that afternoon and again on the stag.
Rafe was already there.
He stood at the edge with his coat back on and his back to her.
"Registry opens at nine," he said. "The hearing is Thursday."
"Good."
"Your father's lawyers say you attacked four men."
"I laid out four men. They attacked me."
"I know. I watched."
She walked up beside him.
The city lay open below them, with the Eastern District still glowing red at the edge.
"That's the thing," Kerensa said. "You watched."
He turned his head.
"At the door," she said. "When Gordon swung at me. You were three steps away. You didn't move."
"No."
"A man you came to speak to was about to hit a woman in front of you."
"Yes."
"And you stood there with your hands in your pockets."
Rafe said nothing for a moment.
The wind tugged at the edge of his coat.
"I timed it," he said.
"Timed what?"
"How long it took you to move." He looked out at the lights. "Gordon's hand went up, and I started to step. You were already inside the swing. You didn't need me. I stayed to see what you would do."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the one I have."
"You were testing me."
"I was watching you," he said. "There's a difference."
"Is there?"
"One of them is useful."
She almost laughed.
