Chapter 13: The Collar
I did not choose between them.
I laid my right hand flat on Ilsabet's bleeding arm and pushed.
Gold light went out of my palm and into her, hot and steady.
Her head came up off my shoulder.
"Rowan, no, it will cost."
"Then let it cost me too."
Her blood stopped running.
I did not know what it was costing, and I did not stop to count.
With my left hand I flung the light the other way.
It rose off my shoulders in a wall of pale feathers, and the dragon's jaws came down on it.
The sound was like a bell struck inside my skull.
Feathers burst in all directions, and the great red-eyed head recoiled.
Above us, the Duke's archers loosed.
The arrows hit the feather wall and fell harmlessly into the flood.
"Linnet!" I shouted. "Sing it!"
My sister was crouched behind the pillar with water to her chest and her face white.
