Chapter 19: The Collar Breaks
The pain went through my hands and up my arms.
The collar was burning me, rune by rune, and it was burning her too.
Beneath my knees the dragon arched and screamed.
The sky spun.
I held on with both fists and my wings beating wild, and a hundred red lines crawled across my skin.
"Rowan," said the cracked low voice in my head. "It feeds on what is taken. It cannot feed on what is given."
"I don't understand."
"Neither did I. For sixteen years."
My mother had a voice like warm iron.
"Don't break it," she said. "Give it everything."
I thought of the seal in the pouch at my belt.
I thought of Ilsabet on the Duke's shoulder, with the white streak in her hair.
I thought of the second year that would be due if I broke the stone.
Every time I had used the gold, I had flinched.
