Chapter 19: Three Cries

The operating room was colder than I expected, and brighter, and much more crowded.

There was a whole crowd in it, and I watched them to keep from throwing up.

Three teams stood against the wall in blue paper gowns, one for each baby, each with its own small bed.

I lay on the table with a curtain across my chest and numbness spreading down my legs.

"You'll feel pressure and tugging," the anesthesiologist said by my head. "No pain. If you feel pain, tell me."

"I feel terrified."

"That's allowed."

The door opened, and Nathan came in wearing scrubs, a paper cap and a mask that made his gray eyes look enormous.

He sat on a stool at my shoulder, and I grabbed his hand so hard that he winced.

"Hello, Mrs. Corwin," he said through the mask.

"Hello. Are you scared?"

"I have never been this scared in my life."

"Good. I'd hate to do this alone."

"You're not alone."

"Then stop telling me, and just hold on."

He did.

I felt a tug at my belly, and then a pull.

The surgeon said, "Here we go. First one."
