Chapter 21: Three Car Seats
A nurse was at the box before the second alarm finished.
She rubbed the smallest girl's foot with two fingers, firm and quick, and said, "Come on, sweet pea, breathe."
The line on the screen shook, jumped, and climbed.
Forty, sixty, ninety-two.
The smallest girl gave a thin, annoyed wail, and every muscle in Nathan's back let go.
"Apnea," the nurse said cheerfully. "Preemies forget to breathe sometimes. She'll outgrow it. You can put your heart back in your chest, Dad."
Nathan didn't take his hands out of the portholes for another ten minutes.
On the twenty-fourth of October, I came home with two babies in two car seats.
The third seat sat empty in the back of the car, strapped in tight.
"She comes next," Nathan said, when I stared at it. "The doctor says Saturday."
He drove up the hill in Brookline at eleven miles an hour.
Four cars honked behind us.
"Let them," he said.
Billie met us at the door in an apron that said KISS THE COOK, which she had clearly never worn before.
