Chapter 6: Three Hearts

I stood in the hall in my socks with my hand flat on the pale yellow door.

The crying stopped.

I could hear him breathing on the other side, trying to be quiet about it.

I didn't knock.

I sat down on the floor with my back against the wood and pulled my robe over my knees.

"I'm out here," I said.

Nothing.

"I'm not going to ask what's in there. I just didn't want you to be alone with it."

A long silence.

Then his voice, rough and low, right behind my head.

"Go to bed, Letty."

"No."

"You need sleep."

"I'm growing three people. I'll sleep when I'm done."

A sound came through the door that might have been a laugh.

"Thank you," he said.

I stayed there until his breathing slowed, and then I went to bed.

Neither of us mentioned it at breakfast.

On Thursday, May eighth, he took me to the specialist himself.

The maternal-fetal doctor was a calm woman in her fifties with reading glasses on a chain.

She looked at the scan for a long time.

"Three separate babies, each with its own sac and placenta," she said. "That's the good news. The rest is that triplets are high-risk, Ms. Penhale. You'll be here every two weeks, and we'll talk about bed rest in the second half."

"How early do triplets come?" I asked.

"Thirty-four weeks is the goal. Thirty-two is common."

I turned my head.

Nathan was staring at the screen, white around the mouth.

"What do you need from me?" he said to the doctor. "Anything. Tell me what I buy."

"You don't buy anything. You make her eat protein and you hold her hair."

"Her hair?"

"She'll be sick every morning for weeks. You'll see."
