Accidentally Fell for My Ex's Uncle: Dark Alpha novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: Payment Plan

By midnight I was a wife with a glowing wrist and a stapled hem, sitting in an alpha's study with a legal pad.

The study had a fireplace, a desk the size of my kitchen, and a wall of old books.

Lucan stood behind the desk with his arms crossed.

I sat in the chair in front of it with the napkin from the tent.

"I would like to talk about terms," I said.

"We are married."

"We are married for reasons. I would like the reasons in writing."

He looked at the legal pad, then at me.

"Dottie and Frankie sleep in the east guest room tonight," he said. "Riverside keeps its land. Nobody asks you for a bride, because you are the bride. That is the whole bargain."

"No, that's a rescue. I'm talking about the bill."

"The bill."

I held up the napkin.

"You lost a wife and a wedding," I said. "I'd like to pay for them."

"No."

"I'm going to anyway."

"You are going to pay for my dead bride."

"Not her. The things around her. The funeral. The flowers. The cake, which I landed in. Her dress, which I tore."

He closed his eyes briefly.

"The funeral," he said, "is six thousand eight hundred and forty dollars."

"You know the exact amount?"

"I paid it six hours ago."

I wrote it down.

"Flowers?"

"Two thousand three hundred."

"Cake?"

"Twelve hundred. It was lemon."

"I know it was lemon, I had it in my nose." I wrote that down too. "And the dress?"

"Seven thousand nine hundred and ten."

I wrote it down, drew a line, and added.

"That's eighteen thousand two hundred and fifty," I said. "Plus one hedge."
