Chapter 20: The Dining Hall

Nobody said anything for a long second.

Then the man in the gray tracksuit said, "What does that get us?"

Kyle had been waiting for that question. I could see it.

"The Master writes the rules," he said. "First rule I write, the Anomaly's over. Everybody who stood with me goes home. Tonight. No more hundred days."

The braid woman nodded hard beside him.

A couple of people looked at each other across the table.

I stood up.

I was still holding Ambrose's hand. I didn't let go.

"Before anybody says yes," I said, "everybody take out your card."

"Here we go," Kyle said.

"Your rule card. The one in your pocket. Take it out and look at it."

Chairs creaked. Cards came out of pockets and bras and socks.

"Look at the top," I said. "Rules one to four. Look at the letters."

"Crayon," said the brave one.

"Round letters. A kid's. That's Mouse." I held up my own card. "Now look at the last line. The going-home line."

The room was quiet while they read.

"Capitals," said the man in the tracksuit slowly. "Leaning over."

"Same as the hall table this week. No bride in the kitchen. No Master in the east wing." I looked at Kyle. "Same as your name tag on night one. FODDER."

The boy held his old name tag up from his hoodie pocket. He'd kept it.
