Chapter 25: The Real Proposal

Five guests stood at the top of the stairs.

The woman with the braid. The smaller of Kyle's old two. The man in the gray tracksuit.

The guy with the liver, who'd been on Babies for three weeks.

And the father from Mirror Night.

None of them looked down at me.

Kyle walked up into the middle of them, and they turned and went with him into the green hall.

I stood in the parlor doorway with my hand on my stomach.

That night at head count, all five were in their beds.

So was Kyle.

Every morning after that, the count came out right.

Eleven, plus me.

I told myself that was what mattered.

By night eighty-two, my sweaters had stopped closing.

I stood in front of the nursery mirror with my cardigan open.

There was a curve under my waistband now. Small and hard.

"That's too early," Penny said from her mattress. "That's way too early for eleven weeks."

"This house isn't earth."

"Don't quote me at me."

She came over and put her palm on it anyway, with her nurse face on.

Then her nurse face fell apart and she grinned.

"Hi in there," she said. "I'm your Aunt Penny. I'm the fun one."

Breakfast had changed.

We didn't eat in the long dining hall anymore. We ate in the kitchen, at the cook's big scrubbed table.

The cook said the dining hall was too far for a woman carrying two.

Mouse sat on the counter by the bread bin with her rabbit, swinging her bare feet.
