Chapter 15: The Offer

Holt did not answer him.

He picked up his glove and his hat, nodded to the official and walked out of the scoring tent into the late sun.

By eight that night the Corbett house in West Ashley smelled of garlic and toast.

Mavis's ranch house had a plaid sofa and a kitchen table with a plastic cloth.

On the wall hung a framed school photograph of a dark-haired girl in a nurse's cap.

Holt had walked past that photograph for two years without being able to look at it.

Tonight he stopped in front of it and looked.

Carys was grinning in a way that said the photographer was an idiot.

Poppy sat in her booster seat with spaghetti up to her elbows.

"Bee," she said, and held out a noodle. "Bee, eat."

"Thank you," Bryn said, and ate it.

Amos sat at the end of the table in his coat, with his flask unopened beside his plate.

Mavis had put him there without asking.

"You'll sleep on the couch," she told him. "Your knees are not going anywhere in the dark."
