Chapter 22: The Members
"That woman was terminated on Friday," the general manager called across the lawn. "She is on club property without permission."
"Deputies, please."
Two hundred members in blazers and cashmere turned from their champagne.
Holt crossed the grass with the trophy still in his hand and stopped between Bryn and the deputies.
"She came on my guest list," he said.
"A list I do not recognize."
"The Tour does."
"This is a private club, Mr. Brannigan, and what the Tour recognizes isn't my problem."
A woman in a camel coat stepped out of the crowd with her glass in her hand.
She was seventy, with silver hair cut like a helmet, and she was the president of the club.
"You have been our general manager for nine years," she said, "and I have never once heard you shout."
"Madam President, this is an employment matter."
"It is eight o'clock on the lawn with the Tour here and four cameras on me," she said. "Everything is a club matter."
