Chapter 24: Ace
"Nobody puts a cake on my green," Bryn said.
It was Sunday morning, a week to the day after the Classic.
She stood at the edge of the fourteenth green with her arms crossed.
She wore her canvas vest over a clean shirt, and a new brass key ring hung from her belt.
Mavis held a white bakery box in both hands and did not move.
"It's a very large cake," Mavis said.
"I can see that."
"It has two candles and a daisy in blue icing."
"Mrs. Corbett."
"I carried it from West Ashley on my lap, and I was cut off by a landscaping truck on the bridge."
Bryn looked at the box, then at the green, which was cut to a quarter inch and stripe-mown in two shades.
She looked at the two-year-old in yellow boots who was standing at the fringe, holding a plastic putter like a flag.
