Chapter 11: The Playlist

On Sunday morning the film school was empty except for us.

Philip let me in through the side door with his own key, and our footsteps echoed down the hall.

"The booth computer is the one the student used," he said. "He copied everything onto it to build the playlist. The drive is only the original."

"So we don't need the drive."

"We need what's on the machine. The original proves who made it."

He had not slept either. I could see it in the grey under his eyes.

The booth was small and cold.

He sat at the keyboard, and I stood behind his chair with a paper cup of tea he had bought for me from a machine in the lobby.

It was hot, and he had waited by the machine until it was.

The screen woke up.

An email program was open from the day before the screening. I read the top of it before he could scroll.

It was the student's list of seven files, sent on Wednesday afternoon.

Underneath was a reply sent twenty minutes later: Looks fine.

It was signed J. Llewellyn.

I read it again.

The tea went tight in my hand.

He had told me last night that the student sent him the playlist. He had not told me what he had answered.

Philip was already reaching for the mouse.

"The first of the two numbered files is the one that played," he said. "I want you to see the file before I open the second. They were made on the same evening."
