After 24 Years of Marriage, My Husband Got His Costar Pregnant and My Son Asked Me to Accept Her novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Warm
By the end of May the long table in the house on Linden Road had every leaf in it.
I had moved it myself, with Bennett and the booth student, from the dining room into the garden.
It sat under the apple tree, which had dropped half its blossom on the cloth.
Nobody had brushed it off.
Philip had brought chairs from his own house, four mismatched ones, and put his wife's mug on the sideboard.
He had asked me first. I had said of course.
Randall's mother sat at the head, because she had refused to sit anywhere else.
"I'm seventy-nine," she said. "I've earned the end where I can see the door."
"You've earned it, Grandma," said Bennett.
He was carrying a tray of roasted potatoes, and he set them down in the middle of the table.
The booth student came through the gate with a bottle of wine and a girl in a yellow dress he introduced as his sister.
"Mrs. Alder," he said. "I got the grant."
"I know. The dean told me. I told her she was late."
He turned the color of the cloth, and sat down.
I took the chair at the middle of the table, on the long side.
Nobody had put me at an end.
Philip sat beside me, with his sleeves rolled.
Across from us, Bennett was telling a story about the sound recordist on his new job, and Grandma was laughing in the way she did, a short dry exhalation through her nose.
