Chapter 10: Eleven Minutes

Declan's POV

I could have lied to her then, and she would have believed me.

She lay under me with her hair across the pillow, her eyes steady and bright and furious, and I was still inside her.

"You watched," Cora said again.

I pulled out of her slowly and sat on the edge of the bed.

My hands were not steady, which was an unusual thing for them.

"Yes," I said. "I watched."

She sat up and pulled the sheet to her chest.

"Ten minutes," she said. "From the toast to the door. You didn't move."

"No."

"Why?"

I told her the truth, because I had made a rule about that.

"My brother has spent forty years making sure that nothing happens in his buildings that he can't unhappen," I said. "I came home eight days before the gala. I knew he was planning something. I didn't know it was you."

"So?"

"So when your necklace broke, I was typing a message to the head of the hotel's security. Four texts. I told him to lock the ballroom cameras, the hallway cameras and the lift cameras, and not to let a single person near the recordings until I got there." I looked at my hands. "If I'd walked across that room and picked you up, Stanley would have had his people scrub every file in the building by midnight."

"You were getting evidence."

"I was getting the only proof of what they did to you."

"And while you were getting evidence," Cora said, very quietly, "I was being stripped in front of two hundred people."

"Yes."

I didn't dress it up.

"I watched your face the whole time I was typing," I said. "I will not forget it. I chose the footage over you for ten minutes, and I'd choose it again, and I'd hate myself for it every time."
