Chapter 22: The Cake Table

The landline had gone dead before I could answer him.

I called back four times and got a busy signal, and then a woman's voice, very polite, saying the number was no longer in service.

"They cut it," Declan said.

"They locked him in his room."

"He's twenty-six, Cora. He's not a hostage."

"He's been one his whole life."

We didn't sleep.

At dawn I was in the pastry kitchen with Romy, building three tiers of white lemon cake with my own hands, and I didn't think about anything except butter.

At noon I delivered it.

The ballroom was roped in white ribbon and lilies, and four hundred gold chairs faced the arch.

The screens hung on both sides, huge and dark.

Tabitha stood by the door in a robe, her hair half done, and looked the cake up and down.

"It's beautiful," she said.

"I know."

"I almost wish you weren't going to leave right after." She smiled. "You'd have made such a charming guest."

"I'm staying."

Her eyes sharpened.

"We're on the list," I said sweetly. "Mr. and Mrs. Declan Kirkbride. Your invitation had a nice line at the bottom."

Romy coughed into her sleeve.

Tabitha's smile came back, a fraction slower.

"Of course," she said. "Do sit near the front."

She went back to her robe.

I went to the back of the ballroom, where a man in a black shirt stood at the console by the bar with a laptop and a very bored face.

It was a different technician from the rehearsal.

This one had a grey beard and a security badge, and when I came near he said, without looking up, "Mrs. Kirkbride."
