Chapter 5: I Do
The church went completely silent.
Hayden stepped into the aisle in his navy suit with his hands out.
"I'm sorry, Uncle," he said. "I can't let you do this."
"Sit down, Hayden," Declan said.
"She's been stalking me for a year." Hayden turned to the pews. "She got into my life. She went after Tabitha. Now she's trapped my uncle, who's been out of the country for nine years and doesn't know what she is."
A woman near the back whispered, "Oh my God."
Every phone in the room came up.
I thought of the ballroom, and my heart went very cold and steady.
I let go of Declan's hand, turned around, and faced all of them.
"Hayden," I said.
He stopped.
"Eight days ago you stood in a ballroom and told two hundred people you'd never seen me. Today you're standing in a church to say I trapped your uncle." I kept my voice level. "Which one is it? Have you never seen me, or have you been fleeing me for a year?"
Somebody in the pews made a small sound.
It might have been a laugh.
"That's not what I..." Hayden started.
"You gave me a necklace on my twenty-fifth birthday," I said. "March ninth. Diamonds. You said you saw it in a window and thought of me."
"Cora."
"Your mother tore it off my neck in front of you. The clasp cut me." I touched the place with two fingers. "Mrs. Kirkbride, would you tell the church whose necklace that was?"
Hayden's mother stared straight ahead at the altar.
Her mouth had gone thin and white.
She said nothing, which was an answer.
