Chapter 7: Sunday Dinner

Stanley Kirkbride's dining room seated twelve and had a chandelier bigger than my kitchen.

There were six of us.

I walked in on Declan's arm with a lemon tart in a box, because I don't know how to walk into a room empty-handed, and I wasn't going to start for these people.

"Mrs. Kirkbride," said a housekeeper, who did not know which one of us she meant.

"Cora's fine," I said.

Hayden's mother sat at one end of the table, and she did not stand.

Stanley sat at the other, and Hayden and Tabitha sat across from where Declan and I were put, side by side, like guests at a trial.

Nobody had asked where I wanted to sit.

Under the table, Declan's knee pressed against mine, once, firmly.

He didn't look at me.

I didn't move away.

"We're delighted to have you in the family, Cora," Stanley said, and lifted a glass. "To a surprising marriage."

Everyone drank.

Everyone except me, because I was holding a glass of water.

And Tabitha, who touched her glass to her lips and set it down again, full.

When the housekeeper came with the wine, Tabitha shook her head, and Stanley lifted a finger.

"Water for Tabitha," he said. "She's been having headaches."

She hadn't asked.

I noticed that without knowing why I noticed it.

The first course came.

Hayden stared at his soup.

He didn't look at me once for twenty minutes.

Then Declan said, in a pleasant voice, "Hayden, ask your aunt to pass the bread."

It went so quiet I could hear the clock.

Hayden's neck turned red.

"Could you pass the bread," he said to the table in general.
