Chapter 14: Guest Room
I gave my father the room at the end of the upstairs hall, the one I had slept in alone for three years.
He sat on the edge of the narrow bed with his suitcase on his knees.
He looked like a boy waiting outside a principal's office.
"I'll make tea," I said.
"Veda, wait."
Glenn stood in the doorway behind me, dressed again, with his arms crossed.
"Say what you came to say, Roger," he said. "I'd rather hear it tonight."
My father nodded slowly.
"I took the money too."
Nobody moved.
"You said you saw the deposits," I said. "You didn't say you used them."
"The lumber yard cut off the store's credit in the second year. Margo said not to worry." He stared at his hands. "Then the account was fine. Nine thousand dollars of your husband's money paid the lumber bill, and I let it."
"Roger," Glenn said, very quietly.
