Chapter 20: Say It to My Face
The butler opened the front door before Troy could knock.
He had opened it for twelve years, and tonight he did not meet Troy's eyes.
"Mr. Wainright is in the study," the butler said. "Miss Aubrey may wait here."
"I'm waiting right here," Molly said, and sat down on the marble bench by the stairs.
She gave Troy a hard, short look.
"Fifteen minutes," she said. "Then I come in swinging."
"With the knife?"
"With the umbrella stand."
He almost smiled.
Then he walked down the hall he had been told to walk down quietly for twelve years, and pushed open the study door without waiting.
Mr. Wainright sat behind the desk in a dark cardigan with a glass of brandy at his elbow.
The lamp made a circle on the leather.
He looked pleased.
"Sit."
"I'll stand."
"You always preferred to stand." The old man smiled. "Five of my best, and you dropped them in a parking lot. Do you know what that is worth to me?"
"Where is Celia?"
"Upstairs, resting, with a nurse. There is no fever. I needed you here."
"I thought so."
Troy took his phone out of his pocket, set it face up on the desk, and left it there.
The screen showed a call, running.
Mr. Wainright glanced at it and then away.
"Recording me?"
"Yes."
"Then let me be clear for your recording." He sipped the brandy. "You are curious about why."
"I want to hear you say it."
"I had a son once. Weak chest, weak heart. He died at thirty-one, and with him died the one thing I wanted to build. I do not care about being loved, Troy, and I do not care about the business. I care about blood."
