Chapter 21: Carried
On Monday morning, at five to nine, Troy stood against the wall of the Wainright boardroom with his hands behind him.
Molly was beside him in the one dress she owned, holding a cup of terrible coffee.
"I'm not supposed to be in here," she whispered.
"Neither am I."
"I like it already."
Twelve directors sat around a long glass table.
Celia sat at the head of it in a white suit, with the junior assistant standing behind her chair.
She was thin, and her hand rested on her stomach, and nobody in the room looked at it.
Giselle sat three seats down, white to the lips, with both hands flat on the glass.
At nine exactly the door opened and Mr. Wainright walked in.
He wore his dark overcoat and carried a leather folder, and his stride did not slow.
The room went silent.
"I apologize for my daughter's theatrics this month," he said, and took the chair at the foot of the table. "She has been unwell. As the chairman of this board, I propose we move to item one."
"Item one has changed," the senior director said.
He was a small, bald man in his seventies with a hearing aid.
He pressed a button on the table, and a speaker in the middle of the glass came to life.
"A boy of fifteen picked up the back of a delivery van," Mr. Wainright's own voice said.
The directors turned to look at him.
"You were a good stud with a gentle temper," the voice went on, pleasant and unhurried. "I would have given you a salary for life."
Someone at the table put a hand over her mouth.
Mr. Wainright did not move.
The tape ran to the end, to the old man's last sentence and the click of the line.
