Chapter 42: The Old Man's Terms
Troy parked the truck behind the gym and saw his wife standing at the front door with her arms crossed.
An old man in an overcoat stood in front of her, leaning on a cane.
Troy covered the lot in a few strides.
"Molly. Inside."
"He wants to talk to you."
"I know who he is."
Mr. Wainright lifted his chin.
He had once filled every doorway he walked through, and now his coat hung off his shoulders.
"Falk," he said.
Troy had not heard that voice since the night in the study, when it called him a tame stud.
"You're on medical bail," Troy said. "You're not supposed to leave her house."
"My sister's driver let me out a block away. I told him I wanted air."
"Then go back."
"Hear me first." The old man's hand shook on the cane. "In front of whoever you like."
Troy looked at the lit window of the gym.
The evening class had come back after Dane's stream.
Fourteen members were stretching on the mats, watching the door.
Troy held it open.
"Come in. Say it where they can hear."
Mr. Wainright walked to the middle of the floor and stood with his cane planted.
Molly stayed close to Troy's arm.
"My sister has held my power of attorney for six years," the old man said. "In that time she has signed forty shareholder proxies in my name, and in the names of cousins who died before I did."
Somebody on the mat swore softly.
"That is how she gets her majority. The child's ten percent was a tidier route. If it fails, she has the paper."
He took a small black recorder out of his pocket and set it on the bench press.
"Her voice dictating them is on that, in my room, laughing. She believed I would never get up the stairs."
