Chapter 46: Sunday
On Sunday morning, Troy woke to find Molly sitting on the edge of the bed, dressed, with a small white stick in both hands.
The house was quiet.
Hazel had slept at Celia's, and the sun was only just up.
"It's Sunday," Molly said.
"You said Sunday."
"I said after the dinner. It's after the dinner."
She held out the stick, and her hand shook.
Troy took it.
Two dark lines.
He looked at them for a long time.
He read the little window twice.
"Molly."
"Two weeks ago I asked you for this, and you said now." She was laughing and crying together. "You said not after. So now is a baby."
His eyes burned.
He put the stick on the nightstand very carefully.
"That's why you were green."
"You noticed."
"I saw your hand on your stomach in the gym doorway. I didn't understand it. I put it away, because I was afraid to hope."
"I took the test on Tuesday, and I wanted you to have one clean day." She wiped her face with her wrist. "I told you I had a good secret. That was the rule."
"It was a good secret."
"Was it?"
"It's the best thing anyone has ever told me."
He slid off the bed onto his knees on the floor in front of her.
He pushed her sweater up and pressed his mouth to her bare stomach, and kept it there.
Her fingers slid into his hair.
"Troy."
"Say it again."
"We're having a baby."
He kissed her stomach again, and then lower, and her breath caught.
"I want you," Molly said. "Now. Before Celia knocks."
He stood and pulled her up and kissed her.
It was slow for the first moment and then it was not.
