Chapter 18: Hearing
I did not put on the headphones.
"Play it in the courtroom," I told Calvin. "I want to hear it when they do."
The hearing was Thursday, in the same Litchfield room that smelled of floor wax and wet wool.
This time the gallery was full.
Reporters had come, and the investors from the Hartford Club sat in a row, the older man in front.
I sat at the petitioner's table in my own name, in a navy sweater I had bought the day before.
Across the aisle, Neal sat beside his lawyer with a gray, sleepless face.
My mother sat next to her own counsel, in black wool, with her silver chignon pinned back up.
She had not looked at me once since I came in.
Lindy sat in the last row, between two women from the victim advocate's office.
"The court will hear the doctor," said the judge.
The man who took the stand was small and soft and wore a bow tie.
He gave his name and his license number to the room, and his hands would not stay still on the rail.
