Chapter 4: Going Live

I did not go to Rowena's dinner.

At seven o'clock on Sunday, the hour Colin had named, I was standing at a folding table in the loading bay in a canvas apron, with my grandmother's biggest copper pot on a hot plate.

Hattie held her phone on a tripod made of two crates and a roll of duct tape.

"You don't have to do this live," she said.

"If it's on camera, nobody can lock it up."

"That's the most you thing you've ever said."

"Press the button."

She pressed it.

I looked at the small red light and said, "Hi. I'm the bride from the chapel."

The count in the corner of the screen read nine hundred people.

"I make candles," I said. "Until yesterday I had a shop on Thackeray Row. Today I have a table, a pot, and eleven hundred pounds of wax. So I'm going to pour for the next three hours, and anyone who wants a candle can order one at the link under this."

I tipped the pot, and the wax went into the first glass jar as a thin, steady line.

"This scent is orange peel and woodsmoke," I said. "I'm calling it Ten Minutes."

Hattie made a noise behind the phone that was half a laugh.

The count hit four thousand.

By eight it was thirty-one thousand, and the comments ran so fast I could not read them.

Hattie read them out between pours.

"Someone says you're a queen. Someone says you should sue. Someone says, and I quote, 'Where is the ex wife, we need a sequel.'"
