Chapter 7: Item Eleven

The first thing I knew was a hand on the glass.

I was in intensive care, with tubes in both arms and a monitor counting me out loud.

The hand belonged to Kellan.

He was still in the black suit from the coffin. There was dried blood on his collar, and one eye had begun to swell shut.

He was shouting at a nurse, and I could only hear it through the door.

"Let me in. She is my Luna."

The nurse had a tablet against her chest. She didn't move.

"Sir, I'm sorry. The patient's emergency contact was changed last night. You aren't on the list."

"That isn't possible."

"It was updated at the pack medical wing, at her own request."

I closed my eyes.

I had changed my emergency contact in a hospital gown with numb thumbs, and it was still the best thing I had done all day.

"She was getting ready for our Blue Moon ceremony last night," Kellan said. His voice cracked on it.

"Last night you put her in a freezer," my father said.

He had come up the corridor behind Kellan, with his coat still inside out.

"You nearly killed her. Then this morning you finished the job."

"Duncan." Kellan turned to him. "Let me talk to her. Please. She listens to me."

"She listens to you."

"Every time she has an attack, I calm her down and she gets better. She's always better by morning. Just let me in."

My father looked at him for a long moment.
