Chapter 19: The Camel Coat

"I did the ID check myself," the teller said over the speaker. "The other teller was out that day."

"Tell the board what you remember," I said.

"A woman in a long camel coat, sunglasses, a scarf over her hair. She told me she'd had eye surgery that week. I asked her to take them off for the photo, and she wouldn't."

"Anything about the coat?"

"The second button was missing," he said. "She'd closed it with a gold safety pin. I thought it was funny, a nice coat with a pin."

My mother had pinned that button herself, in a church parking lot, two winters ago.

She did it because I hadn't had time to sew it.

"Mr. Hallstrom," the chair said. "Does that mean anything to you?"

"It means a bank employee can say anything over a telephone."

"Would you know her voice?" I asked the teller.

"I think so. She was soft-spoken. Kind. She said thank you twice."

Beside me, Joanna's chair creaked.

"This is ridiculous," she said, in a low, hurt voice. "Deanna, you know me. I would never..."

The line was quiet for a moment.

"That's her," said the teller. "That's the same voice."

It was very still in the atrium.

A woman in a gray blazer stood up from the last row.

I hadn't noticed her come in.

"Detective, county attorney's investigators," she said. "A search warrant was executed at an apartment on the sixth floor of a building on Grand Avenue at seven this morning. Ms. Kerslake, you weren't home."

Joanna turned in her seat.

"I was at a client meeting."

"Officer," the detective said.

A uniformed man came through the side doors holding a clear evidence bag.
