Chapter 12: His Pattern
Her living room was big enough to land a plane in.
White sofas. A grand piano with nothing on it. Windows full of grey lake.
She poured coffee from a silver pot exactly like Gran's.
"Wedding present," she said, when she saw me looking. "From his grandmother. I kept it out of spite."
I liked her already. I was going to have to stop liking people.
[EDMUND HAS AN EX-WIFE??]

"How long were you married?" I asked.
"Six years. He was very charming for five of them."
"And the sixth?"
"In the sixth I told him I wanted a divorce."
She sat down across from me and held her cup without drinking.
"My father left me money. A lot. Edmund signed a prenup to get it. If I left him, he got nothing."
"Unless."
"Unless I was at fault. There was a conduct clause. Public intoxication. Public violence. Things that embarrass a family."
"And you'd never done any of those."
"Never in my life. I was a very boring wife." She almost smiled. "So he made me do them."
She set the cup down.
"A charity dinner at the Drake. I went to the ladies' room. When I came out, a waiter walked straight into me with a full tray of red wine."
"On purpose."
"He was paid. I found that out a year later. I put my hands up to catch it. And there was a photographer right there, by chance."
"By chance."
"The picture ran on Monday. Me, arms out, wine everywhere, a waiter on the floor, my face screaming."
"It looked like you threw it."
"It looked like I threw it at him." She nodded. "Then pill bottles in my bathroom that weren't mine. A doctor's name I'd never heard. Gossip at every table that I was 'struggling.' Six weeks later, my own lawyer told me to settle."
