I read the termination email twice in the lobby.
"Dear Ms. Fowler. Given recent events, the Northcott has decided to go in a different direction."
"He'll let you keep the first twenty thousand," Benedict said. "He'll call it a kindness."
"He'll call it a kindness in front of cameras."
"Probably."
"Then I should be there to say thank you."

At ten the next morning the Gold Ballroom was set up like a wedding nobody wanted to attend.
Six rows of gold chairs, two TV crews, and a podium with the Northcott crest.
Edmund stood at the podium in a navy suit and a pink pocket square.
Beside him on an easel was a poster of a string quartet in evening gowns.
I came in through the side door in my trench coat.
Benedict came in behind me and stood by the wall with his hands in his pockets.
"Reopening night," Edmund was saying, "deserves elegance. Our guests are coming for the Northcott, not for a gimmick."
He smiled at the front row.
"So we've made a change. With great respect for Ms. Fowler and her little company, we've gone a different way."
