Chapter 28: The Speakeasy
"Three years ago," Gran said, "I made a rule."
She held the microphone.
"A man who can't keep a wife can't keep a hotel. Most of you have heard me say it. Some of you laughed."
The board members at the family table did not laugh now.
"It was a stupid rule. I made it for a good reason and it did a great deal of harm. I withdraw it. Tonight. In front of all of you."
[SHE TOOK IT BACK]

"My successor," Gran said, "is my grandson Benedict."
The room started to applaud. She held up one hand and it stopped.
"Not because he's married. He offered to give up this chair in March, at my table, so his wife would be free. He gave up his job in April, rather than call her a liar. Tonight he stood on a chair and said 'guilty' to the press."
She turned to look at him.
"A man who can do that can run a hotel. But I have conditions."
Benedict stood up beside her.
"Go on."
