Chapter 9: Forty-One Thousand Dollars
When security took Bryce out, somebody near the window started clapping.
By the time I reached the door, the whole floor was clapping.
Renee sent me home at noon and told Quinton to drive.
"She's had a day," she said. "If you take her anywhere but my house, I'll find you."
"Yes, ma'am," Quinton said.
We went three blocks in his rental car without speaking.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"What Bryce shouted. Who paid for your house."
Quinton's hands tightened on the wheel.
"Three years ago I bought a small place near the school," he said. "Bryce wired me the down payment. Forty-one thousand dollars."
"Why would he do that?"
"He said he'd made a bonus and wanted to help. Our dad died when we were kids and Mom never had much. I thought it was the first decent thing he had ever done for me."
"And the ring?"
"It went to him that same spring."
I looked out at the road.
Forty-one thousand dollars.
I felt sick.
"Pull over," I said.
He pulled into the lot of a closed taco stand.
I opened my banking app with a hand that wasn't quite steady.
For seven years I had paid eight hundred and fifty dollars a month into a joint savings account Bryce and I called the house fund.
He had said he'd manage it, because he was good with numbers.
The balance read two hundred and twelve dollars.
I scrolled back.
Three years ago in April, two transfers had gone out, twenty thousand and twenty-one thousand.
